X-Men query

Ok, so I've been reading Astonishing X-Men recently, and while I've enjoyed it a lot, it also leaves me somewhat confused at times. There is so much history that it continually refers to, and attachments I'm supposed to have to characters that I just don't get.
I've been wanting to go further back and read up on more X-Men stuff for a while (especially with the new movie coming out), only... I have no idea where to begin.
So! I figure I have a fairly well-read, geekified bunch of friends, surely they can help me out!
Any suggestions?
